How to find a good Salsa teacher

How do I find a good Salsa teacher?

The number of salsa teachers has increased greatly in recent years. It can be a challenge to keep an overview and that means that it can be difficult to find a good salsa teacher. The good news is that there are some attributes you can easily identify to make sure that the teacher is serious.

  1. Experience: It’s always a good idea to inquire how many years the teacher has been teaching. In general, the teacher should have at least 3 years of experience. After 3 years of teaching, the teacher usually knows how to make the students improve fast.  2. Shows/Performances: To participate in dance shows, you need to have great skills in technique, timing, and personal expression. If your teacher is taking part in shows, he or she probably dances on a high level, and has broad knowledge not only of how to move your body to the music, but also how to make you look good and confident on the dancefloor.

3. Understanding the music:

It’s a real benefit if your teacher is working with music, as a DJ or a member of a band. Through working with music, the teacher knows what to play to make the student dance well and how to inspire them to improve. He or she can recommend the music you need when you want to practice on your own.

4. The level of the classes:

It’s always a good sign when the teacher is teaching all levels, from beginner's classes to master classes.

This means that he or she has a broad knowledge about the dance, and you don’t have to change teachers to get to the next level.

5. International teaching experience:
It’s an advantage if your teacher has an international teaching experience. To be accepted as a teacher at the International Salsa Congress you need, without exception, to be a high level dancer. Teaching in various countries also means that the teacher has experience with different styles and cultures.
